TCAS prevents Atlantic conflict between Iberia and Air Europa aircraft
aeroTELEGRAPH reportings (20-21 July) the investigation into a serious airprox involving an
Iberia Airbus A321XLR and an Air Europa Boeing 787 over the Atlantic. The aircraft were
operating at the same cruising altitude when collision-avoidance systems triggered emergency
manoeuvres. The successful operation of the Traffic Collision Avoidance System prevented a
potentially dangerous situation. Investigators are reviewing routing and air-traffic-control
factors associated with the occurrence.
Tel Aviv airport dispute over US tanker aircraft resolved
airliners.de (21 July) reports that Israel and the United States have resolved a dispute regarding
additional US tanker aircraft in the Tel Aviv area. Rather than operating from Ben Gurion Airport,
the aircraft will be based at Israeli Air Force facilities. The agreement removes a source of
operational pressure at Ben Gurion during the peak summer season. Airport operators had
previously warned that military aircraft parking requirements were limiting civilian capacity and
creating disruption risks for commercial airlines.
ITA Airways launches pilot training programme
ITA Airways (16 July) reports that it is launching its first Multi-Pilot Licence (MPL) training
courses, with the aim of training approximately 280 pilots over the next four years. Recruitment
begins this month and the first courses start in October. The initiative is designed to create a
long-term pilot pipeline as demand for qualified flight crew continues to rise globally. ITA says it
