Retail Web Traffic: Prime Day Loses Its Punch, But The Consumer Read Holds Up

Prime Day 2026: More Days, Less Spike. What the Traffic

Says for AMZN, WMT, TGT, COST

Amazon moved Prime Day to June this year (June 23 to 26) for the first time and stretched

it to four days (same as last year), yet our web traffic work shows the event generated the

smallest peak-day spike on record. Amazon's peak-day traffic ran 36% above its pre-event

baseline, versus 47% in 2025 and a steady 57% to 58% in 2022 to 2024. Spikes are measured

vs a pre-event baseline, defined as average daily web traffic over the 21 days ending one week

before each event, which excludes the pre-event ramp, the event itself, and the post-event

hangover.

Even adjusting for the longer window, total incremental traffic fell back to the level of an

old two-day event, roughly half of what the four-day 2025 event delivered. The competitor

halo that Prime Day historically threw off to Walmart, Target, and Costco compressed alongside

it. Net, the flagship event is losing its incremental demand power, a signal worth considering into

2H reads on the discretionary consumer. That said, elevated gas prices and the fading of tax

rebates make the interpretation more difficult.

The History: A fade that predates this year. The spike has been shrinking for half a decade.

In 2018 and 2019, Prime Day drove Amazon traffic 72% and 71% above baseline off a much

lower absolute base. The event then settled into a 54% to 58% band from 2020 through 2024 as

Amazon's daily traffic roughly plateaued in the high 70s of millions of visits.

The shape has never changed: the event is heavily front-loaded, Day 1 is always the peak, and

each subsequent day steps down.
