What's new

• On 6 July 2026, ZenToshin, an Osaka-based credit card processor, filed

Names mentioned for bankruptcy with liabilities of about ¥125.9bn, leading to the immediate

operations. Its earnings deteriorated sharply during COVID-19 due to its Outperform; TP: ¥10,090)

heavy exposure to restaurants and SMEs. While gross transaction value

(GTV) later recovered, it remained burdened by legacy financial liabilities and

failed to rebuild its balance sheet.

• Founded in 1987, ZenToshin built a niche in SME-focused card payment

processing and merchant acquiring, particularly for restaurants and service

businesses, offering payouts up to six times per month. At its peak, it served

over 200,000 merchants. Importantly, it also served merchant segments

that were often more difficult for traditional financial institutions

to support, including businesses with weaker credit profiles and higher

operating-risk characteristics.

Why it matters

• Unlike major buy-now-pay-later (BNPL) and payment players whose core

strengths lie in credit underwriting, risk management, and asset-light

payment platforms, ZenToshin's model was heavily reliant on pre-

funding merchants and frequent early settlements. As a result, liquidity

and funding availability were much more critical, leaving the company

structurally more vulnerable when profitability and funding conditions

deteriorated.

• In our view, ZenToshin's collapse is therefore better characterised as a
