Protein intake is probably the most important element supporting muscle repair and
regeneration following intense and extensive exercise. Autophagy and nitric oxide
synthesis—we covered both in the last two issues—improve the efficiency of the process
of muscle repair; protein intake helps stimulate muscle protein synthesis and provides
the building blocks of this process. Several studies show that the rate of muscle protein
synthesis is a function of exercise intensity and duration as well as the level of protein
intake. Luckily, the process of muscle protein synthesis associated with protein intake
can be measured quite precisely through muscle biopsies, allowing for proper testing
of different combinations of dose, frequency and timing. Highly reliable research in this
field suggests that taking 20 g (0.7 ounces) of protein every 3 hours—with the first 20
g consumed within an hour post-exercise—achieves the highest rate of muscle protein
synthesis and thus the fastest muscle recovery following an intense exercise bout.
