Industry Is Out of Reach - and That Boundary Is the Whole Point
Here the reframing sharpens: competitiveness for industrial offtake is zero at
current scale. LPG arrives at ~R$2.90/m³ via Petrobras; local biomethane would
land near ~R$6.00. The gap is not the molecule - it is transport, storage, and
distribution, which roughly double the delivered cost ("produce the molecule at
three, the logistics stack hits three as well"). The path to viability is not
technological but combinatorial: clustering 3–4 large offtakers within a single
industrial pole (Anápolis, Itumbiara) to reach the ~60,000–70,000 m³/day plant
minimum, against a ~12,000 m³/day large-consumer footprint. Until that cluster
forms, industrial biomethane is a story only for firms with a binding sustainability
mandate. For investors, this defines the boundary of the near-term theme:
transport, then data center, then app-based vehicles - industry last, and only where
geography clusters demand.
Contract Structure Is the Hidden Risk Layer
The supply side carries an underappreciated tail risk buried in offtake design. Take-
or-pay contracts demand firm daily volumes regardless of production - which
collides violently with sugarcane seasonality, where a plant peaking near ~80,000
m³/month can fall to zero for three consecutive months. Signing firm daily volume
against a source that periodically produces nothing forces the counterparty to buy
natural gas to honor delivery. The expert's ranking of source reliability inverts the
market's instinct:
