Dragon Boat Festival was muted, but in

Travel demand remains soft, in line with broader consumer weakness Research Analyst

China’s May retail sales data pointed to softer consumer spending, and travel- +852-2203-5415

related demand also showed signs of deceleration amid a more cautious household

spending environment. Based on our channel checks, hotel performance during

the Dragon Boat Festival holiday remained under slight pressure, with RevPAR

slightly down or broadly stable, compared with positive growth in previous

holidays. The muted result was largely in line with market expectations, as

investors had already priced in a weaker outcome given the macro backdrop.

The muted holiday performance was driven by several factors. Hot weather and

heavier-than-usual rainfall across South and Southwest China disrupted travel

plans. Elevated travel costs, partly due to higher oil prices and flight surcharges,

also weighed on consumers’ willingness to travel. In addition, demand may have

been diluted by recent public holidays, including Labor Day and Qingming Festival,

as well as the upcoming summer vacation, which may have led some families to

postpone trips. Against this backdrop, the soft Dragon Boat Festival data should be

viewed more as confirmation of weak near-term consumer sentiment than as a

fresh negative surprise.

For the summer holiday outlook, booking visibility remains limited due to shorter

booking windows in a soft demand environment. Similar to last year, a clearer read

on summer travel demand may not emerge until mid-July.
