ESG
Based on its mission of building a “good company” for all stakeholders, including
employees, customers, business partners, shareholders, and society, the Shimamura
Group says it is promoting sustainable ESG activities through its main business. On
27 June 2022, the company held its first ESG briefing, at which it presented its basic
stance on ESG activities and outlined its environmental and social initiatives and its
measures to strengthen governance. Shimamura discloses details of its
environmental, social, and governance initiatives on its sustainability site.
Environment
In addition to its previous measures such as zero-clothing waste and the reduction of
CO2 emissions volume, Shimamura is promoting fully cyclical recycling and the sale of
sustainable products. The specialty apparel sector has normalized the disposal of
excess inventory, but Shimamura’s policy is to sell every last garment shipped to its
stores, and if necessary it will transfer products (to different stores) or carry out
appropriate price reductions rather than dispose of excess inventory. By optimizing its
logistics through in-house delivery and promoting the reduction of energy used, it has
succeeded in reducing its CO2 emissions, the progress of which is published on its
website. Sustainable products accounted for 27.5% of private brand sales in FY2/25
(FY2/27 target: 40%). The ratio of fully recyclable hangers in FY2/25 was 75.4%
(FY2/27 target: 90%).In FY2/23, the company started calculating Scope 3
greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and expressed its agreement with the Task Force
on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD). Shimamura aims to reduce Scope 1
and 2 GHG emissions by 60% versus FY13 levels by 2030.
