Germany’s reform hammer in full swing – when will markets

notice? Deep dive into French politics; Update on USD, taking

profit on sterling longs and kiwi shorts; DB’s latest Asia weekly

US equities were mixed Thursday, S&P flat but NASDAQ down 0.8%. Dow up

1.1% for a fresh record. US10yr yields also steady at 4.48%. Oil also unchanged.

Muted moves come ahead of US holiday Friday.

US payrolls missed but questions in the details. Headline up 57k, consensus at

113k, with a net 74k in downward revisions to the prior two months. Private

payrolls up 49k. The household survey looked better, with unemployment down

0.1ppts to 4.2% (consensus steady at 4.3%), though this was associated with an

unusually large drop in labour force participation. But details look suspicious here:

there was a 60bp drop in the labour force participation rate for prime-age

workers, the largest since January 1968.

Bottom line: more noise than signal and Fed officials will likely treat it accordingly.

More importantly, the broader constellation of labour market data points last week

such as the May JOLTS, ADP, and jobless claims continue to paint a picture of

stability, albeit within a still uncomfortable equilibrium between low hiring and low

firing. Brett Ryan takes a closer look.

US jobless claims were better: initial down 1k in latest week, continuing up 2k, but

below consensus.

Fed’s Daly: “Policy in a slightly restrictive position, so inflation should come

down”.

This week the German government agreed on one of the biggest reform packages
