Power and Thermal Management Are the Core ODC Engineering Bottlenecks. As solar arrays get

larger to generate more electricity, the electricity has to travel farther to get back to the spacecraft,

requiring longer cables. Longer cables means more power is lost as heat, requiring heavier, thicker

wiring. Nearly all electrical power used by compute becomes waste heat, which must be transported

through radiators into space. As compute power rises, the radiators need to get larger, resulting

in moving head becoming heavier and more complicated. Since the solar panels, computers, and

radiators are all in different places, the system must move large amounts of electricity and heat

across the spacecraft. While manageable at a small scale, at large scale, the losses, wiring mass,

radiator mass, and mechanical complexity become design constraints.
