Midjourney Scanner: Full-Body Ultrasonic Computational Tomography
Midjourney describes the platform as "full-body ultrasonic computational tomography."
Traditional ultrasound creates images through direct interpretation of reflected sound waves.
Computed tomography reconstructs anatomy from numerous measurements acquired from
multiple viewpoints. The Midjourney Scanner appears to merge these two approaches. As a
patient passes through the imaging ring partially submersed in water, a precision lift lowers
the body at approximately four centimeters per second. Over the course of sixty seconds, the
scanner captures hundreds of sequential slices while maintaining positioning accuracy of
roughly one-tenth of a millimeter. Those slices are then reconstructed into a complete three-
dimensional model of the body. Midjourney claims the resulting images can resolve tissue
structures as small as approximately 0.5 millimeters, potentially providing anatomical detail
sufficient for numerous screening, monitoring, and diagnostic applications. If achievable in real
world and/or clinical practice, such capabilities would represent a significant departure from
today's trade-off between imaging speed, resolution, cost, and accessibility.
Strategic Implications for Butterfly
For Butterfly, the Midjourney Scanner highlights the strategic value of its underlying ultrasound-
on-chip technology and intellectual property. Historically, investors have viewed Butterfly
primarily as a handheld ultrasound company competing within point-of-care imaging. The
Midjourney collaboration suggests a potentially much broader opportunity through the Butterfly
