Financial framework: credible targets, delivery required
Management reiterates through-cycle targets of high single-digit revenue growth, >20%
operating margins, >15% ROIC and >70% cash conversion. Revenue growth is supported
by exposure to attractive end markets, innovation and pricing opportunities. Margin
expansion is expected to come from pricing discipline, operating leverage and efficiency
programmes. This is offset by pricing competition from low cost manufacturer and high
ERP costs as roll-out peaks in 2027E (only 15% the business has currently received the
roll out). Cash conversion is the weakest area historically, with volatility driven by capex
and working capital cycles; management sees scope for improvement through stronger
discipline and incentive alignment. Even if the targets are achieved, we struggle to
reconcile these targets with a 12m forward P/E of 28x.
Positives: growth markets & cash improvement
Renishaw is well positioned in structurally growing markets, with differentiated
technology in encoders, metrology and AM. The business benefits from strong customer
relationships, high switching costs and a broad innovation pipeline, supporting sustained
share gains in attractive segments like semiconductors and A&D. The innovation engine
is credible, with clear product roadmaps across sensors, systems and software, and a
growing installed base supporting aftermarket revenues. Cash conversion is also
achievable, driven by operating leverage, pricing and efficiency initiatives, with
management targeting >20% margins over time.
Negatives: cyclicality & capital allocation
However, we see several constraints. (1) Growth remains cyclical, particularly in
