Abbott Laboratories: Libre Duo and Libre Assist product demo at ADA (American Diabetes Association)

Libre Assist alleviates burden of meal-time decisions

Over 70% of T2D patients say they don’t understand how to eat. Libre Assist was

developed to help reduce cognitive burden of meals. Libre Assist employs AI to identify

foods and supplement patients with relevant information. Patients are presented with

simple guidelines-based options (not expected to make major lifestyle modifications)

that can minimize glycemic response to the meal. Patients who use Libre Assist will also

be wearing a Libre sensor. While predictions are based on a global model, the sensor can

provide information on individual physiology. Combined, these are expected to help

patients gain a better approach to meal management. ABT expects this to lead to

improved individual glycemic profiles that will result in superior outcomes over time.

ADA guidelines help educate HCPs on ketone monitoring

The ADA released a decision algorithm on Friday that is expected to help physicians

understand how to interpret the ketone monitoring data. Currently physicians don’t

regularly measure or monitor changing ketone levels. The decision algorithm is intended

to reduce confusion around a metric many physicians might be unfamiliar with

interpreting.

AI implementations to increase organizational efficiency

Outside of Libre Assist, ABT has also incorporated AI in its customer service. This has

enabled high frequency, low complexity customer service requests (e.g., caught sensor in

towel and want replacement, situations with no medical event) to shift to a self-service

model. More complex communications that might have a medical event will still have a

human on the line to take the call.
