• Yesterday’s price action was exemplary of another systematic investor unwind with those investors “selling what they own” and
YTD lagging sectors (FIN/HC) / anti-momentum outperforming. We don’t expect this to be the start of a major trend or turning
point. Given the massive weight of Tech/Comm Services within the S&P 500, any small outflows from Tech spawn a strong upside
move in other sectors, if at least temporarily.
• One day doesn’t change a trend and the bigger concern to us has been the very weak performance of the Financials sector YTD
(the worst!). Uncertainty over the path of monetary policy, industry worries over stablecoins to deposits, and the contemporaneous
flattening of the yield curve have pressed the group. Over the past few days, the durability of private credit has once again
emerged as several large funds have announced outsized redemption requests. Additionally, some of the largest weights within
the sector (MA, V, & BRK account for ~25% of the Financials sector) have also hurt FINs YTD performance. If oil prices continue to
fall, Financials should benefit from a steeper yield curve, increased lending activity, and mega IPOs/ M&A activity against a strong
U.S. economic backdrop.
