Bull case. The recently stronger US industrial economy drives higher and more lucrative

business-to-business volumes for UPS in a period that the company is simultaneously shrinking

lower margin ecommerce exposure. Higher pricing and elevated fuel surcharges combine with

management cost reductions to drive core improvement in Domestic Package segment

margins, handily exceeding modest market expectations. Amazon volumes remain consistent

following the recent “glide down” in the business and allows UPS to leverage growth in targeted

higher margin segments, supporting the dividend with a path to future increases.

Bear case. The recent addition of FedEx Office locations in the Amazon returns network leads to

continued share loss for UPS, both from the company’s largest customer and, more importantly,

profitable business-to-business shippers. Management attempts to reduce costs are limited by

union seniority challenges as tenured and top of pay scale workers displace lower cost, newer

employees. UPS’s board is faced with the difficult but likely correct decision to drastically

reduce the dividend, significantly and negatively impacting the attractiveness of the company’s

shares for income investors.

Where we stand. Current improvement in freight market fundamentals suggest likely higher

volume and pricing gains than expected for UPS, potentially making near-term guidance for

core margin improvement despite Amazon volume losses appear less aggressive. This will likely

allow the UPS board to maintain the current dividend next year. However, long-term price
