European Cargo ceases operations and enters insolvency

airliners.de (4 June) reports that UK cargo airline European Cargo filed for insolvency on 3 June,

with three administrators from Teneo Financial Advisory appointed as joint insolvency

administrators. Flight-tracking data indicate that the airline had already stopped operations on

19 May.

European Cargo had operated a fleet of mainly ex Virgin 6 A340-600s which are famously thirsty

aircraft. The insolvency adds to recent signs of pressure among smaller or specialist cargo

operators where aircraft ownership, maintenance, fuel and charter-demand volatility can

quickly affect liquidity. According to the administrators, European Cargo had been facing

significant financial pressure due to reduced flying activity, working capital challenges and

rising fuel costs. The collapse comes just months after the carrier expanded its operations,

adding aircraft, opening a new base at Teesside and launching services from Cardiff Airport.

Italian competition authority opens Volotea fuel-surcharge investigation

airliners.de (4 June) reports that Italy’s competition authority has opened an investigation into

Volotea over alleged post-booking fuel surcharges. The airline is alleged to have confronted

passengers with additional fuel charges of up to €14 after ticket purchase. The case comes as

fuel costs remain a central issue for European airlines and regulators are scrutinising how

carriers communicate and apply charges to customers. The investigation will examine whether

the surcharge practice complied with consumer-protection rules and whether passengers were

adequately informed at the point of purchase.
