Utilities - HK/China: Watt’s Up #100: Apr installation, potential Europe turbine restrictions, US nuclear

On 26 May, the load rose to 268GW, indicating rapidly rising demand. This early surge

was mainly driven by unusually high temperatures in southern China, which boosted

cooling demand, along with stable industrial production and a rebound in consumer

activity. The peak also showed a clear structural feature, concentrating in the evening

hours. To ensure reliable supply, the grid deployed 6.6GW of new-energy storage

capacity during the peak, effectively supporting electricity demand.

Power: Green power direct connection for multiple users

Recently, the NDRC and the NEA released the notice on promoting green power direct

connection for multiple users. Xinjiang region has recently promoted the implementation

of multi-user direct green power supply projects to support emerging industries such as

green computing. The first batch includes two projects in Hami and Karamay, both

serving data centers, with a combined installed capacity of 160MW (40MW wind and

120MW solar) and expected annual green power consumption of about 263mn kWh,

significantly reducing carbon emissions.

Compared with the traditional “point-to-point” model for a single user, this new

approach adopts a “one-to-many” intensive supply mode, expanding policy applicability,

lowering investment risks, and addressing key challenges in local renewable energy

consumption. By delivering renewable power directly to multiple users through dedicated

lines, the model improves efficiency and utilizes clean energy. Going forward, authorities

plan to leverage regional energy advantages, accelerate more such projects, and

replicate successful models to enhance renewable energy consumption. Overall, these
