Telefonica partners with Google Cloud on sovereign cloud in Spain

Telefonica has announced a strategic partnership with Google Cloud to deliver a sovereign

cloud offering for Spanish public administrations and regulated industries, aimed at

strengthening data control and compliance with national requirements on privacy, data

residency and operational autonomy. Under the agreement, Telefonica Tech will act as the local

sovereignty partner for Google Cloud’s Data Boundary services in Spain, managing data

governance controls such as residency, access and protection, while Google Cloud expands

capabilities at its Madrid region. Customer data hosted on Google Cloud will be encrypted using

keys generated and held by Telefonica within its own sovereign cloud, keeping control within

Spanish territory and reducing exposure to foreign jurisdiction access requests. The partners

said the initiative will support secure digital transformation, improve regulatory compliance

and enhance the resilience of Spain’s digital ecosystem as organisations adopt technologies
