Uranium "Expert Call Takeaways & Sector Debates" Eadie
China continues to expand aggressively, adding 8-10 reactors, while India is increasingly
emerging as a larger growth market. SMRs are gaining traction as a complementary
solution, addressing both financial and safety constraints associated with large-scale
reactors. Backed by long-term agreements and rising interest from data centers, SMRs
are becoming increasingly embedded in medium-term demand expectations (albeit
smaller overall contribution to demand story). More broadly, electrification trends -
including the rapid growth of data centers - are expected to drive sustained power
demand, with nuclear playing a critical role in supplying reliable baseload generation.
Utilities: Securing supply but not wanting to overpay
Procurement remains below a sustainable replacement rate, though utilities are more
active than generally perceived. Producers expect a structural deficit to emerge and are
therefore reluctant to commit excess volumes at current prices, while utilities balance
energy security with cost discipline. This tension continues to constrain contracting
activity despite clear forward requirements. Utilities' willingness to contract above spot is
a signal of further price appreciation expected, while producers are incentivized to defer
sales in anticipation of stronger pricing ahead. This dynamic reinforces the upward bias
in long-term prices relative to spot. Further upside will likely require increased utility
participation and a resolution of the current buyer–seller standoff. At the same time,
utilities remain cautious on uncapped pricing structures.
~3yrs of second supply runway before meaningful tightness
TradeTech sees several years of runway before the deficit accelerates more meaningfully,
