Amazon.com: Alexa for Shopping to lead Amazon’s push into the Agentic Era

Executive Summary

Alexa for Shopping (“AfS”) launched in May 2026, combining Rufus and Alexa+ into a

more powerful AI assistant designed to help shoppers research, discover, & purchase.

Amazon trained AfS on its expansive product catalogue & proprietary data, while

leveraging Alexa+’s persistent memory and interaction history to better understand user

preferences. As users engage more frequently with AfS and Alexa+, interaction data will

continuously refine the system, creating a flywheel where greater usage drives better

personalization, higher conversion, and incremental engagement over time.

Amazon is not alone in developing AI agents for eCommerce. Google, OpenAI, Walmart,

and others have all released early-stage agentic capabilities as competitors battle to

become the starting place for Online shopping. This has fueled a bear narrative for

Amazon retail that 3P horizontal agents could erode direct traffic, thus limiting Amazon’s

ability to serve high-margin advertising. While Similarweb data suggests Amazon’s direct

traffic has not been impacted by growth in Generative AI traffic, competitive agents are

still in the early stages. We believe AfS can be a driver to help maintain strong direct

traffic to Amazon; advantages vs competitor agents include personalization through

access to proprietary 1P shopping data, superior 3P selection & delivery speeds via

Amazon’s logistics network, established Prime member benefits, and benefits from AWS

infrastructure & cost efficiencies.

Long-term, we believe AfS can be an increasingly effective tool at retaining traffic as

well as driving incremental spend on the platform. According to Amazon, Rufus drove
