AI Helps Backlog Unproportionately For Largest Contractors. Construction backlog
rose to 8.8 months in April, a 10-month high, but the strength remains uneven and
concentrated among large contractors, particularly those with exposure to data center
and AI-related projects. 42% of firms with over $100 million in revenue are under
contract to work on data center project, compared to 7% of contractors with less
than $100 million. Contractors with these projects are seeing significantly stronger
demand, with backlog levels around 12.2 months, roughly four months higher than
peers without such exposure. In contrast, smaller contractors are experiencing weaker
project pipelines relative to a year ago. Despite this divergence, ABC’s Construction
Confidence Index shows the majority of contractors expressing optimism around sales,
