Company Description
Target Corporation is a North American mass merchant retailer. In 2020, it generated revenue
of $93.5 billion. The company operates all of its approximately 1,900 stores under the Target
format in various sizes, as well as an online business at target.com.
Valuation Method and Risk Statement
Target’s category exposure is more cyclically exposed than the other North American
discounters; therefore it faces upside/downside risks related to factors that affect consumer
spending (such as unemployment, consumer confidence, food inflation, fuel inflation,
housing prices). Competitive brick and mortar openings, increased competition from online
retailers and price competition could affect its performance. If Target fails to evolve its
retailing capabilities to incorporate ecommerce, its sales and profits could be affected.
Target’s profits could be affected by increased commodity prices, distribution costs and labor
cost. As Target looks toward international expansion into the Canadian market for further
square-footage expansion opportunities, these risks are further compounded by country
specific execution, foreign exchange, and political risks. Target is a major discount retailer in
the United States. As such it fills the role of intermediary between the consumer and product
suppliers and manufacturers. Target is subject to all economic, political, social and
substitution risks that could negatively impact both consumers as well as suppliers. Our price
target is based on a multiple analysis.
