Sunday Spotlight: BankTech - A Look at Recent AI Announcement and Their Impacts

May 17, 2026

○Citi has been the most explicit about AI as an enterprise transformation lever. During 1Q26 earnings, Citi said

80%+ of colleagues are using AI tools, generating 42mn interactions since inception, Markets is processing

4,4K+ documents via AI, creating 1,700+ hours/month of capacity, and 10K+ engineers are using advanced

AI, including agentic AI, with one example being 30+ years of legacy code remapped in two days. On its

earnings call, Jane Fraser said Citi now has a more structured, firmwide AI approach focused on 4 buckets:

revenue / client experience / business-model change, productivity and end-to-end process simplification,

defensive capabilities like cyber / fraud / AML, and longer-term workforce implications. Citi also tied AI to

structural efficiency and lower headcount over time, saying severance actions and automation are part of

a self-funded productivity plan.

●Bank of America

○BofA has focused on scaled, embedded AI already showing up in client engagement and treasury

workflows. BofA highlighted continued traction in its AI-enabled digital ecosystem. In March, BofA said

client digital engagement reached 30bn interactions last year, Erica surpassed 3.2bn interactions, and AI-

driven tools are helping drive engagement across consumer and treasury products; in April it also tied

CashPro App growth to investments in mobile, AI, and security.

●Wells Fargo

○Currently, Wells appears to be talking less about frontier / agentic AI in earnings and more about incremental

digital-assistant adoption and customer-service automation. Wells Fargo’s AI-powered virtual assistant

Fargo has reached over 1bn customer interactions.
