Takeaways From Our Voice AI Expert Call + AI

Platform News This Week

We share our takeaways from our voice AI expert call alongside other key AI

updates from the past week.

Coverage Updates:

Takeaways from Our Voice AI Expert Call on 5/12. We hosted a call with Jake Downie, Head of AI

at Bland.AI, to discuss the evolution of voice AI, TWLO’s role in the ecosystem, and takeaways from

TWLO’s SIGNAL '26 conference. Our key takeaways were: 1) voice AI has moved decisively from

pilots to enterprise deployments; 2) TWLO remains a mission-critical telephony and omnichannel

layer for voice AI platforms; 3) emerging speech-to-speech (STS) models represent a structural shift

that could compress the voice AI stack over time; and 4) reliability, observability, and latency are

now the core industry bottlenecks. We walked away incrementally constructive on TWLO’s strategic

relevance in a voice AI-driven communications stack.

Voice AI adoption has shifted from pilots to more scaled deployments. Enterprise demand is•

now centered on full-volume use cases, particularly inbound sales qualification and customer

support, with buyers focused less on feasibility and more on reliability, latency, and monitoring

at scale.

STS models threaten STT/TTS layers, not telephony. The expert expects a gradual transition•

away from cascading STT/LLM/TTS architectures toward end-to-end STS models, which

promise lower latency and more natural conversations but remain some way from enterprise-

grade reliability, making the disruption more acute for STT and TTS vendors than CPaaS

providers.

TWLO remains a critical enabling layer in voice AI stacks. TWLO underpins real-time audio•
