China suspends autonomous vehicle permits after Baidu outage
China has suspended issuing new autonomous vehicle permits after a Baidu Apollo Go
robotaxi outage in Wuhan when the vehicles abruptly stopped, according to a
Bloomberg report. The halt prevents firms from adding vehicles, launching pilot projects,
or expanding into new cities. Baidu’s Wuhan operations are also suspended pending
investigation. The report said authorities have called for stronger safety oversight, while
rival firms such as Pony.ai and WeRide said their services continue normally.
House lawmakers to introduce bill to toughen US ban on Chinese
vehicles
Two US House of Representives lawmakers plan to introduce bipartisan legislation to
strengthen a ban on Chinese automakers entering the US market. The bill would
formalise an existing regulation imposed by the Biden administration that effectively
blocks Chinese passenger vehicle sales and introduce additional measures, including
restricting vehicles designed in China with advanced connectivity or software. It follows
similar efforts by the Senate and is driven by national security concerns, particularly risks
that connected vehicles could collect sensitive data.
Rivian mulls making its own lidar sensors, possibly in partnership with
Chinese firms
Rivian is considering making its own lidar sensors, potentially via a partnership with a
Chinese firm, as part of a broader push to develop in-house autonomous driving
technology. The EV maker aims to produce sensors in the US using Chinese technology
rather than sourcing directly from Chinese suppliers that dominate the low-cost lidar
