*Watch the Video* Expert Call on Intellectual

Property Rights in the AI World

We hosted a call with Daniel Gervais, a legal expert on AI and intellectual

property, to discuss data licensing agreements across Internet and the

framework governing AI search engines' use of 3P content. Our key takeaway is

that AI search engines are increasingly likely to pay content owners for access, .

which we think is a positive for RDDT as it approaches potential data licensing

renewals with GOOGL and OpenAI. See below for further takeaways and a

replay.

Key Takeaways:

1. LLMs may need to modify or limit dissemination of 3P content: Copyright law allows the

dissemination of 3P content as long as it does not act as a substitute for the original work.

AI search engines may need to constrain how they resurface 3P content to avoid violating

existing legal standards.

2. Data licensing could become commonplace: As AI companies enter into paid licensing deals

with content owners, they help establish a clear market for data. That, in turn, makes unpaid

use of third party content harder to defend under existing legal exemptions.

3. Changes to AI algorithms may drive more traffic to Internet platforms: Internet companies

experiencing traffic declines as a result of AI-generated summaries may have more legal

standing to claim copyright infringement, given the AI summary is providing consumers with

an alternative to visiting the site. As a result, LLMs may need to drive more traffic to Internet

platforms to reduce potential liability.
