ESG

As a leading company within the restaurant sector, McDonald’s Holdings Japan

(MDHJ) actively engages in ESG initiatives. In January 2018, it built a global platform

called Scale for Good for the purpose of resolving social and environmental issues,

with the intention of helping create a sustainable world. We commend the company

for having the best ESG initiatives within the restaurant sector.

Environment

McDonald’s aims to shift all of the packaging it supplies to consumers around the

world to reusable materials, recyclable materials, or certified sources by the end of

2025. In Japan, it gradually began replacing the plastic straws, spoons, and other

cutlery in its stores nationwide with paper and wooden items from October. It is

shifting to paper straws and wooden spoons, forks, and knives made from

FSC-certified materials.

MDHJ’s environmental philosophy is to act with consideration of the environment. The

company has received commendation for efforts began in 2018 to equalize and

improve the efficiency of distribution services and in the first fiscal year in the Reiwa

era it received a special award in the Green Physical Distribution Partnership

Conferences and in FY19 it received the Logistics Grand Prize (business

improvement award). Starting in 2019, the company in a tie-up with Yomiuri Shimbun

Holdings in the Kansai area began joint delivery of salt in trucks delivering evening

newspapers using extra space in the delivery trucks. This project eliminated the

delivery of salt using conventional four-ton vehicles.

Social

The company aims to give back to local communities and places this philosophy at the

center of its social contribution activities.
