China briefly renews then suspends US beef export licenses amid Trump-Xi
summit
Reuters reported that China renewed export licenses for US beef plants before
reverting their status to “expired” hours later, according to customs data. The
plants lost eligibility after permits expired in 2023, affecting ~65% of facilities. The
move comes amid US-China trade talks, with US beef exports to China falling to ~US
$500mn in 2025 from a US$1.7bn peak in 2022.
EU excludes Brazil from approved meat exporters list
O Globo reported that the EU excluded Brazil from its list of countries allowed to
export animal-origin products, including beef and poultry, under new antibiotic
control rules effective 3 September 2026, citing insufficient guarantees on
antimicrobial use. Brazil is engaging with EU authorities, which requested
additional information, and aims to meet requirements in the coming weeks to
restore market access.
While the removal of Brazil beef and poultry exports from the EU list would be
negative for Brazilian meatpackers (JBS, BEEF) and poultry producers (JBS, MBRF),
we flag the EU isn’t currently a major importer and in 2025 accounted for 2% of
