In our past two issues, we covered the benefits of high levels of Bifidobacteria in the
microbiome, particularly as we age. We showed that there is a clear healthspan benefit
in having high levels of Bifidobacteria in our microbiome. Yogurt can help achieve that,
but what are best yogurts for us? We like full-fat yogurts, which require less processing,
do not need additives and provide increased satiety—due to high protein and fat levels.
Also, we want yogurts with no added sugars and the right probiotics—Bifidobacteria or
those that make the microbiome produce Bifidobacteria. In the area of probiotics, we
feel that Stonyfield is ahead of everybody else. In the area of protein content and zero
additives, Fage 5% is in our view the best option. If one has to go for zero-fat, we feel
that Fage 0%—the only zero-fat yogurt with zero additives—is the best option.
