Prudential Financial Inc: What could a sale of the Brazil business look like?
Context & timing
This comes as investors await a "strategic review" with 2Q26 EPS based on 1Q26
call commentary. PRU short interest is high, driven we believe by Japan issues
relative to the stock's outperformance of late, as well as limited upside risk with 2Q
results/strategic review.
The idea of a Brazil monetization did come up at our 2Q preview dinners & investor
conversations, but most investors have said such a sale would be viewed
negatively given Brazil represents a growth area for PRU International at a time
when the flagship Japan business is facing growth headwinds from the sales
investigation.
Other points that we and investors have argued are that Brazil does not
represent an area of complexity, valuation drag, nor earnings headwind for
PRU overall - it is objectively the opposite.
Individual life, retail annuities and legacy/closed block units within PRU are
generally viewed by us & investors as ideal targets for M&A given their
complexity, capital intensity, earnings pressure and long-tail reserve risks.
This said, we have long been proponents of incremental simplification of
business mixes across the life space.
We note however that PRU under CEO Sullivan has executed similar sales of late
including PGIM Taiwan and PRU's Kenya insurance business - so, a sale of Brazil
would at least directionally align with recent international dispositions.
This said, Brazil has been a clear bright spot with sales and earnings at record
levels.
Importance of capital return
It has previously proven difficult for investors to see clear benefits of acquisitions in
PGIM for example, and cost savings initiatives of prior mgmt teams haven't
appeared to materially reduce G&A/corporate.
