Canada pitches stability to Japan as China tensions persist (Bloomberg News) Yesterday,

Bloomberg News reported that Canada is positioning itself as a stable supplier of energy and critical

minerals to Japan, as geopolitical tensions and supply disruptions push Tokyo to diversify its imports.

Japan has been seeking alternatives after Middle East conflict affected energy flows and China

imposed restrictions on exports with both civilian and military applications amid ongoing tensions.

During a recent trip, Canada’s International Trade Minister highlighted economic security, supply

chains and food security as key areas of collaboration, alongside US$1.7B in newly signed agreements.

Canada is promoting its ability to deliver energy to Asia relatively quickly and without major geopolitical

bottlenecks, making it an attractive partner. Discussions also included potential crude oil exports

and expanded LNG production, with Japanese firms already invested in Canadian energy projects.

While no specific critical minerals projects were announced, both countries are exploring cooperation

frameworks such as stockpiling and joint ventures. Overall, Canada aims to strengthen ties by offering

reliability and reducing Japan’s exposure to volatile or politically uncertain suppliers.
