Illumina maintains a clear incumbency advantage, but labs are actively evaluating Ultima, Element,

and Roche post-patent expiry (2022/2023), with multi-vendor strategies increasingly viewed as

best practice to drive down costs, even as Illumina remains the "gold standard" for quality; 2)

cost/throughput. Pricing remains the primary decision driver, with users willing to trade modest

quality for lower cost or faster turnaround, while capacity constraints on high-output NovaSeq

systems creates risk of cost inflation as volumes shift across platforms; 3) Roche/clinical. Roche is

generating strong early interest given brand trust, clinical integration potential, and faster run times,

positioning it as a credible entrant particularly for clinical and rapid-turnaround use cases; and 4)

workflow/data. Switching remains gated by workflow complexity (library prep, dual systems) and

weaker bioinformatics ecosystems at competitors vs. Illumina’s DRAGEN advantage, although labs

are developing internal solutions to bridge gaps and enable gradual volume migration.
