Background
Data centres in space are being explored as a potential workaround to the growing constraints
on terrestrial hyperscale infrastructure, namely power, cooling, land and permitting. The
concept relies on near-constant solar generation and vacuum-based heat dissipation, but
in practice requires lifting heavy compute infrastructure into orbit, with significant cost and
servicing challenges.
Early designs suggest modest multi-MW capacity per launch, well below terrestrial multi-
GW scale, while economics remain highly sensitive to launch costs and reliability. As launch
costs are expected to come down, the key debate is whether this could be a genuine future
architecture for AI compute, or a technically interesting but economically marginal concept.
