Satellites - UK government unveils £62m funding package for satellite communications
and space innovation
The UK government has announced more than £62m in new funding to support the
development of domestic satellite communications technologies, space security capabilities
and commercial space innovation, as part of its strategy to strengthen national resilience and
reduce reliance on foreign technologies. The package includes £42m through the third round of
the Connectivity in Low Earth Orbit (C-LEO) Programme, which supports projects focused on
on-board processing, active antennas, optical links, networking and routing, and user
terminals. This latest allocation could bring total C-LEO funding to £77m. An additional £20m
will be provided through the National Space Innovation Programme (NSIP) to help businesses,
universities and research organisations develop and commercialise space technologies, with up
to 40% of funding earmarked for Space Domain Awareness and In-Space Assembly and
Manufacturing projects. The government also confirmed that the Space Clusters Infrastructure
Fund (SCIF) will launch a new round later this year, aiming to distribute £37m in grants by 2030.
