Brazil meatpackers grant collective vacations as China quota approaches

limit

Globo Rural reported that JBS will grant 20-day collective vacations, extendable by

another 10 days, at its Colíder and Juara plants in Mato Grosso, which have daily

slaughter capacities of 500-550 and ~650 head per day, respectively. Relatedly,

Globo Rural also reported that several processors, including Frigol, Better Beef,

Iguatemi Beef and Plena Alimentos, are also reducing slaughter activity or granting

collective vacations as weaker Chinese demand may create a temporary imbalance

in demand, prompting processors to adjust production levels and protect margins.

The move follows meatpackers' expectations that Brazil's beef export quota to

China, which had reached 65% completion by May, is nearing exhaustion.

We expect strong volatility over the next few weeks on what will be the outlook for

meatpackers. On one hand, cattle prices should ease, on the other, the loss of

volumes will be a major headwind into 3Q.

US government plans support program for smaller meatpackers

The Wall Street Journal reported that the USDA plans to provide up to US$500mn in

financial support for small and medium-sized US beef processors to help maintain
