L&I ETFs: bigger footprint, but still not a market breaker 30 June 2026 Corrected

In our 2026 Year Ahead (see report), we conducted a rigorous analysis of the increasingly Equity Derivatives

popular levered & inverse exchange-traded product (L&I ETP) space and its market Global

impact, broadly concluding that they didn’t pose a tail risk to markets at the time. Since

then, growth in the space has been parabolic, with US L&I ETP AUM reaching ~$180bn

and the total beta-adjusted rebalance now nearly $27bn per 1% SPX move (vs ~$12bn in

Nov-25). Much of this growth has come from semis, with ETPs on SOXX, MU, and SNDK

having soared in size. Do L&I ETPs now have the potential to break markets? We still find

it unlikely, given even aggressively dire assumptions point to rebalances of ~25%-30% of

volumes. However, this is not to say L&I ETPs aren’t leaving a footprint in pockets of the Global Equity Derivatives Rsch BofAS
