Crude prices are sharply lower Monday morning after President Trump said the US and Iran had
agreed to extend the current ceasefire by 60 days and start the work to reopen Hormuz. While
an extension of the ceasefire and progress towards reopening Hormuz is much welcome news, it
should be clear that this is an interim deal between two parties who do not trust each other and have
plenty of hard work left before on can speak of "peace". The stock and oil market is however forward
looking, and seems to believe that we are now finally moving towards an end here. Terms are not
known, but there is speculation that Iran would see assets unfrozen and sanctions on oil sales
(likely including LPG) lifted. Putting Trump's optimistic tones -"ships, start your engines" aside - the
reopening process of Hormuz holds the key to how quickly the oil market can regain some balance.
The IEA's timeline on "weeks" to clear the strait of mines and declare it "safe passage" may or may
not be correct. Equally, the logistical puzzle that follows with the need to clear a backlog of several
hundred ships is also unclear. The US will of course be loathed to approve Iran's newly established
Persian Gulf Strait Authority (PGSA). Certainly, all but the most risk willing owners will want more
