VOLV B: Few surprises, just recommitting to a proven strategy

ample of a Las Vegas DC running on 300 Volvo D16

engines). DC now accounts for 15% of Penta’s order book. Overall, management aims to double Penta’s sales in both industrial

and marine applications “within 5-10 years.”

Heavy investment phase largely complete: Management noted that, between capacity investments and the development of new

technology platforms, the post-pandemic period has seen elevated capex and R&D outlays. However, this investment period is

coming to a close. Though they wouldn’t specify, our impression is that this should increase the cash flows that can be returned

to shareholders.

Punchy autonomy ambitions: One of the most eye-catching headlines yesterday was Volvo’s ambition to achieve US$3bn in

autonomy-related revenues within five years of introducing driverless on-highway solutions (expected Q1 2027). It aims, moreover,

to accomplish this with accretive margins. Volvo envisions an ecosystem (called “Autona Freight”), covering the whole spectrum

of autonomy requirements and in which related revenues are shared with technology partners (e.g. Aurora). We note that this is

a much broader approach to autonomous solutions than we see at some peers, namely PACCAR, who see the most obvious value-

add for OEMs in producing autonomy-ready hardware.

Mixed trading update: CFO Mats Backman noted that demand in Europe remained solid in April and May, despite the geopolitical

situation. In North America, demand is recovering strongly, with Volvo taking truck orders for Q3 and Q4, and is accordingly

expanding capacity. Truck utilisation volumes remain healthy overall. More negatively, he noted that cost inflation has been higher

than expected, mainly because of freight but also due to raw materials.
