Telefonica – Wins smart water contract

Telefonica Tech has secured a 10-year contract from regional infrastructure agency

SOMACYL to digitise the water cycle in Spain's Castilla y León region. The project

involves deploying 175k smart water meters with NB-IoT connectivity, replacing manual

readings with automated remote monitoring to improve efficiency in water distribution. The

system will run on Telefonica's NB-IoT network via its Kite platform, designed for low

power consumption and reliable coverage in hard-to-reach areas, alongside a modular data

analytics platform enabling real-time consumption tracking, leak detection and predictive

NATO is considering using civilian 4G and 5G networks for military communications,
