Question of the week: At what point does higher energy and inflation pressure begin to

change consumer behavior enough to impact industry-wide demand and result in negative

earnings revisions for retailers?

With gas and inflation "breaking points" on everyone's minds, this week we focus on some

simple (and probably known) math tricks and consumer thresholds. While we keep saying

we are not seeing evidence of consumer collapse, we are definitely seeing the "creeping" effect

of inflation on lower-income HHs moving to middle-income HHs, with the highest HH incomes

perceiving inflation as a nuisance for the moment. Below are some handy mental math

thresholds and tracking metrics we use to gauge the health of consumer demand in the future.
