Severe Influenza Cases Double in Brazil as Early Virus Circulation Drives Rise in

Hospitalizations (RDOR, HAPV, SAUD)

Brazil is seeing a sharp increase in severe influenza cases, with reported cases of

severe acute respiratory syndrome (SRAG) linked to the virus reaching ~6,760

between January and April 2026, more than double the ~3,374 cases recorded in the

same period of 2025. The surge reflects an earlier and stronger-than-usual seasonal

wave of respiratory viruses, with experts highlighting increased circulation of

influenza and other pathogens during this period. In this context, the Ministry of

Health and specialists reinforced the importance of early treatment with antiviral

oseltamivir (Tamiflu), which is most effective when initiated within 48 hours of

symptom onset and can reduce complications, hospitalizations and mortality,

particularly in high-risk groups.
