A Portfolio Manager’s Guide to Finding Long Stock Ideas
Stock Idea Generation. Each month, we publish our favorite long idea stock screens. They
encompass many investment styles and themes including value, growth, capital creation,
cash usage, corporate actions, dividends, and financial institutions.
Greatest Hits List (GHL). The GHL represents companies appearing most frequently on
our 31 stock screens. Overall, Adobe, Hewlett-Packard, UGI Corp., Open Text,
salesforce.com, Comcast, Skyworks, AO Smith, Amdocs and LKQ have the greatest
number of ‘hits’ on our long screens. We look at changes in the screens as well for possible
inflection points and companies with the greatest recent jump in ‘hits’ on the list include
Southwest Gas, HCA Holdings, Occidental Petroleum, Zoetis, Otis Corp., DOW, Verisk,
Tenet Healthcare, UGI Corp, Garrett Motion and Workiva.
NEW BUY SCREEN: High ROIC and Declining Share Counts. We have launched a new
screen of 64 companies with strong return profiles and declining share count (or low
sector relative share count increase). Large cap companies include: AutoZone, Altria,
Colgate-Palmolive, Valero, EOG, Vertex, HCA Holdings, Lockheed Martin, EMCOR,
Lam Research, Applied Materials, KLA-Tencor, Dell Tech, Adobe, Jabil and Steel

Potential and Current Activist Targets. One of our favorite areas to find uncorrelated
