U.S. Equity-Linked Strategies: From GameStop to Game Theory: The New Retail

Investor (05/12/2026). Venu Krishna and team highlighted a shift in retail investor behavior, with

enthusiasm to buy dips and chase rallies weakening through 2H25–1Q26 amid declining

sentiment. Despite equities reaching a record ~33% of US household net worth, households

were net sellers of ~$631bn in 2025, while simultaneously rebuilding cash balances. In fact, US

households added nearly $1.4Trn in liquidity in 4Q25 across checking, savings and MMF

balances, rebuilding cash at the margin even as asset values rise, which the team views as a sign

of more cautious behavior. They highlight that while low-cost index trackers continue to attract

steady inflows, outflows from leveraged long index ETFs and decelerating flows into leveraged

long single-stock ETFs suggest that it's highly speculative risk budgets that are being

reallocated elsewhere, potentially outside of equities entirely. They note that speculative
