RDOR/FLRY/SAUD/HAPV: Population aging drives healthcare demand, but cost eduardo.resende@ubs.com
pressures remain +55-11-2767 6015
Recent study shows that the share of total healthcare consumption attributable to
individuals aged 50+ is expected to increase from 35% in 2024 to 50% in 2044.
Healthcare consumption by the 50+ population, which totalled R$247bn in 2024, is
estimated to more than double by 2044 (+126%), reaching R$559bn. Over the same
period, total healthcare consumption in BZ is projected to rise by 61%. The estimate
includes healthcare products and services across the public and private sectors.
UBS's view: The article outlines a trend of increasing healthcare demand in BZ amid
population aging, with the supplementary healthcare system playing a key role in
this process. However, challenges to the system’s sustainability remain. This trend
entails higher system-wide costs due to increased utilization and greater clinical
complexity, while the cost impact of new technologies continues to intensify. As
such, more structural reforms are required in the sector, as already seen in some
pilot initiatives—particularly those involving risk-sharing arrangements, lower-
coverage health plans, new payer–provider remuneration models, data
interoperability, and related measures.
